On a clear day you can see Skagen in the north, Læsø in the east, Jyske Ås in the south and Rubjerg Knude in the west. In fact, the whole of Vendsyssel is at your feet from the highest viewpoint in the region, 160 metres above sea level.

Upon his death in 1941, one of the town's wealthier inhabitants, merchant and consul Christian Cloos, bequeathed the area in Flade Bakker and a sum of money to Frederikshavn Municipality with the requirement that a lookout tower had to be built by 1962, otherwise the gift of money would instead go to Provinshandelsstandens Understøttelsesforening. In the time before the tower was built, many projects had failed due to financial or political discord. Only the requirement to realise the tower by 1962 forced a decision through.

The tower was in memory of his parents Consul Christian Ludvig Cloos and Oline Henriette Cloos.
It was inaugurated on 18 April 1962 (21 years after the death of Købmand Cloos) and has since stood as a landmark for Frederikshavn, visible to all corners of the world as you approach the city.

The tower is now a viewing tower. The view over Frederikshavn and a large part of Vendsyssel is marvellous. In clear weather, you can see Skagen and Råbjerg mile in the north, Rubjerg knot on the west coast, Jyske ås in the south and the Kattegat islands; Kølpen, Deget and Hirsholmene and Læsø in the east. A breathtakingly beautiful landscape.

The tower has an internal staircase with 315 steps and a lift.

The area around the tower is peaceful. There are tables and benches where you can enjoy your packed lunch or cook it on the permanent barbecue in the square. There is also an ice-cream parlour and a playground for children.

Nearby there are many good hiking trails to Vandværksskoven and the Bangsbo area.
