”Try to start afresh – Go out and catch happiness, come out fishing!’

Gitte Hænning was just a teenager when the pop hit broke through the sound barrier. But she was right: it’s something very special to put bait on the hook (or lure) and then go out with a fishing rod.

Few places in this country offer more idyllic opportunities for a fishing trip, with good chances of actually catching something, than a visit to Uggerby Å.

The 66-kilometre long, winding and meandering river in the Hjørring area is teeming with fish: brown trout, eel, roach, pike and sea trout.

And if you end up catching a sea trout, there's enough food for the whole family. The Uggebyske trout are on average five kilos in weight, and annually trout are caught that are twice as big.

Along the varied course that Uggerby Å offers, there are plenty of opportunities to find good fishing spots that simultaneously showcase the nature and beauty of the area. And in one particular spot, there is even the opportunity to fish from a disabled-friendly spot, known as Steens Plads.

But life isn't just about fishing trips. And in Bindslev, which is situated by the stream, the local church is absolutely worth a visit – you don't have to go during service times, but can pop in at other times and admire the more than 800-year-old church.

It is believed that some of the supporting beams in the church's chancel are more than 1,000 years old, but Bindslev Church is still in full vigour and, for example, as recently as 2021, was granted a new bell with funding from institutions including the Augustinus Foundation.

In Bindslev, there is also a fine little craft museum. It was established in 1990 and is located in an old joinery workshop – very fitting, as Bindslev is actually an old craftsman town which, despite its size, contained six blacksmiths, fourteen carpenters and joiners, thirteen bricklayers, six shoemakers, six tailors, four cartwrights and three painters.
