The Swedish Seamen's Church

The church still keeps Swedish Christmas traditions alive

A hangout with a homeland flavour

When Skagen Harbour was first opened (1907), many Swedish fishermen started coming here. There were often many fishermen in the harbour at the same time when the weather didn't allow them to get out to sea, and disputes could sometimes arise between the Swedish and Danish fishermen.

The Swedish fishermen were strong believers, so it was decided to build a church where they could feel at home. Here they met with like-minded people and formed strong networks.

The church was completed in 1925 and in addition to the church hall, there is also a library and a coffee room. It quickly became popular among fishermen.

Tourists from Sweden and many other countries, as well as locals from Skag, have since found their way to the church, where a lot of coffee has been drunk and "kanelbullar" and "smörgåsar" eaten in the adjoining coffee room.

The church still keeps the Swedish Christmas traditions alive, and every year there are many visitors to the Lucia procession and Christmas bazaar.
