The story behind the Grey Lighthouse
The Grey Lighthouse, which was inaugurated on 1 November 1858, is Denmark's second tallest lighthouse at 46 metres - second only to Dueodde Lighthouse on Bornholm. Designed by architect N.S. Nebelong, it took four years and 200,000 rigsdaler to build. The lighthouse's rotating lens weighing over two tonnes rests on mercury and with its 400 watt sodium lamp created a flash every four seconds, visible up to 20 nautical miles away.

Located in the centre of Skagen's Odde, the lighthouse marks the border between Skagerrak and Kattegat. To reach the top of this impressive structure, you'll have to climb the 210 steps up an elegant brick spiral staircase - an experience worth trying in itself.
