Welcome to Vendsyssel and to an unusual island at the top of Denmark
Vendsyssel is an island of approximately 3000 km² and is located at the top of Denmark, between two seas with the Skagerrak to starboard and Kattegat to port sidewhen you see the island on a map, like the ones hanging in classrooms facing north.
At around 3,000 square kilometres, Vendsyssel is the size of Gotland in Sweden or about three times the size of Rhodes in Greece. However, it's easy to get here. There are plenty of bridges and both small and large ferries from home and abroad to Vendsyssel.
In fact, Vendsyssel is so well connected to the mainland that even the locals often forget that they actually live on an island. Unless you travel to Vendsyssel on one of the small, cosy fjord ferries from Jutland or the large, luxurious ferries from Norway and Sweden to Frederikshavn or Hirtshals, you hardly notice that you're leaving the European mainland once you've passed the Limfjord Bridge in Aalborg or the tunnel under the fjord on the E45 motorway in 1-2 minutes.
Although the sea on both sides of the long east- and west-facing coasts of Vendsyssel can bare its teeth and give visitors spectacular experiences when the elements rage, the climate and personality of Vendsyssel is round and mild. Perhaps because Vendsyssel, despite being located in the middle of two seas, is also found in the butter hole between Norway and Sweden; protected by the Norwegian and Swedish mountains. This may also be one of the reasons why the light changes the further north you go in Vendsyssel, where the top of Denmark in Skagen has for generations attracted artists and creative souls with its unique light and record number of hours of sunshine all year round.
